Partner update call: Enhanced Innovative Septic System Pilot, July 2023

Citation:

Erban, L., S. Wigginton, T. McCobb, AND S. Glassmeyer. Partner update call: Enhanced Innovative Septic System Pilot, July 2023. Nutrients Solutions-Driven Research Project: Partner update call on the Enhanced Innovative Septic System Pilot Project, NA, RI, July 26, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

Nitrogen (N) loading from onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) can be reduced significantly by enhanced technologies with a lignocellulosic carbon source, which may also mitigate some Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs). Partners with the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC), US Geological Survey (USGS), and US EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD), have monitored 13 closely deployed enhanced septic systems in Barnstable, MA, for nitrogen removal performance and impacts on groundwater quality. The presentation will share the latest data from this ongoing effort with our larger partner network.
