Chuang, W., J. Jozaei, C. Allen, AND A. Garmestani. Beyond social vulnerability analysis: Accounting for social-ecological resilience in coastal governance. 2022 Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society, Montreal, Quebec, CANADA, August 14 - 19, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

·       This study advances understanding of how to improve coastal zone management, which has critical ramifications for improving environmental outcomes. This paper moves the research on coastal zone management forward by analyzing the issue, and providing guidance for moving forward. In the long-term, improving coastal zone management has broad-scale implications for the environment in the United States, with particular interest for Regions (e.g., 2, 4), communities (Puerto Rico, USVI, Florida) and the general public.

Description:

Social vulnerability analysis has been unable to deliver outcomes that reflect the reality of vulnerability and its consequences in an era characterised by accelerating environmental change. In this work, we used critical discourse analysis and key informant interviews to understand different framings of social vulnerability in coastal governance and management, globally and in New Zealand. We found that framing of system vulnerability could vary depending on the definition of resilience adopted, which has critical ramifications for coastal governance of linked systems of humans and nature.
