Citation:

Gilliland, A., G. Hagler, B. Gullett, AND P. Lahm. Component of USGEO talk to OSTP: #16 Mitigate Smoke Impacts on Health and Improve Air Quality; #17: Reduce Prescribed Fire Smoke Emissions. USGEO presentation to OSTP, Washington or N/A, DC, September 19, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This is a slide set that will be part of a larger presentation developed by the U.S. Group on Earth Observations (USGEO) for the intended audience of the Office of Science, Technology, and Policy (OSTP). This will be a within-federal government presentation that is a follow-on from a draft white paper developed that quickly assessed the data and related needs to address wildfires, then developed a series of recommended efforts to continue or initiate across federal agencies. ORD coordinated with OAR regarding the presentation materials that connect to their interests (i.e., potential expansion of Smoke Ready Communities from R&D pilot studies to a national program).

Description:

This set of content describes ongoing efforts and recommended next steps for two topics identified in the draft white paper: recommendation #16 - Mitigate Smoke Impacts on Air Quality and Health; and, #17 - Reduce Prescribed Fire Smoke Emissions. The purpose, current status, challenges, and recommendations are presented. The USFS will present content for #16 relevant to the Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program; the EPA will present the content related to filling observational data gaps, Smoke Ready Communities, and prescribed fire emissions research needs.
