A Review of River Restoration: Political, Social, and Economic Perspectives

Impact/Purpose:

Social aspects of restoration are severely understudied relative to biological implications. This book review provides a summary of the key points and emphasizes the importance of social science of restoration from the edited volume River Restoration: Political, Social, and Economic Implications. The book synthesizes what has been done to date to document and analyze social impacts of restoration in rivers, with a geographical focus on Europe.

Description:

In River Restoration: Political, Social, and Economic Perspectives, editors Bertrand Morandi, Marylise Cottet, and Hervé Piégay provide an edited collection that “is intended to be a showcase of research achievements: questions, methods, and scientific results” related to river restoration that “provides stimulating perspectives for understanding restoration in its social, economic, and political dimensions” (Cottet, Morandi, and Piégay 2021, 35). The book points out the limited body of research on social aspects of river restoration, and provides synthesis that is sufficiently thorough to serve as a literature review of most peer-reviewed work to date addressing social perspectives in river restoration, with particular emphasis on European cases. It also provides a nuanced exploration of what “restoration” is, and the complicating expectations of the final status of a “restored” space.
