Summary of Transportation-Related Research in ORD

Citation:

Baldauf, R. AND H. Vreeland. Summary of Transportation-Related Research in ORD. National Tribal Air Association (NTAA) Mobile Sources Work Group Monthly Call, NA, Virtual Meeting, August 05, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

Transportation sources significantly impact air quality and human health. Understanding methods to measure and mitigate these impacts has been important to improved public health for states and tribal areas across the US. This presentation provides an overview of EPA's Office of Research and Development work to measure and characterize transportation emissions for a range of light-duty, heavy-duty, small engine, and other sources. This overview is being presented to the National Tribal Air Association (NTAA) to provide an update on ORD facilities capabilities and research projects.

Description:

This presentation summarizes EPA ORD's research on the characterization of motor vehicle and other transportation sector air pollution emissions and exposure. Transportation sources significantly impact air quality, climate, and human health in urban and rural areas. Research on transportation sources in ORD integrates many disciplines to meet scientific and programmatic needs on emissions, air quality, exposures, and health effects. This research also addresses broader scientific questions and community planning issues, including: (1) What are the magnitude and extent of emissions from transportation vehicles and facilities? (2) What mitigation can reduce/eliminate public health concerns related to traffic emission exposures? (3) How can we design more sustainable transportation systems? (4) How can we promote more healthy, livable communities? This overview is being presented to the National Tribal Air Association (NTAA) to provide an update on ORD facilities capabilities and research projects.
