Use of Sensors in Air Quality Monitoring

Citation:

Clements, A. Use of Sensors in Air Quality Monitoring. 2nd technical meeting of communities of practice on air quality in Asia Pacific:Sensors making sense:Use of Hybrid air quality monitoring systems in Asia, rtp, North Carolina, September 10, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

There is increased interest in exploring the use of lower-cost air sensors for supplemental air quality monitoring and in merging these observations with measurements made by existing high-quality regulatory networks and satellite observations.  To enable such applications, information about sensor data quality and accuracy is needed.  This presentation, for the Second Technical Meeting of Communities of Practice on Air Quality in Asia Pacific on September 10th, 2021, is designed to give a primer on the current state of air sensors, what users can expect of air sensor data quality, and a review of EPA's work to develop performance testing protocols, metrics, and target values for air sensors for ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) sensors.  To support the session on Sensors Making Sense: Use of Hybrid Air Quality Monitoring Systems in Asia, the presentation will also briefly highlight EPA's effort to combine data sources on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.
