Impact/Purpose:

The ability to measure per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in the emissions from stationary sources of interest is a critical need for States, Regions and Program Offices as well ORD research activities. Emissions measurements of known and acceptable are needed to identify and quantify PFAS emissions from stationary sources such as chemical production and industrial application facilities, combustion, incineration and thermal treatment technologies as well as evaluate the performance of emission control technologies. OTM-45 establishes a critically needed, formal sampling and analytical stationary source emissions test method for a targeted group of priority PFAS compounds potentially emitted from a variety of stationary sources including chemical production and industrial use facilities, combustion, incineration and other thermal treatment sources, as well as PFAS emission control devices.

Description:

Emissions measurements of known and acceptable are needed to identify and quantify PFAS emissions from stationary sources such as chemical production and industrial application facilities, combustion, incineration and thermal treatment technologies as well as evaluate the performance of emission control technologies. Knowing that a formal PFAS emissions test method was needed as soon as practical, the research approach required a combination of laboratory and field testing research, as well as the evaluation of the varied approaches used for emissions testing in multiple State test programs. Based on the research approach, a comprehensive, performance-based PFAS sampling and analytical method was prepared in the OAQPS Other Test Method format. The method provides formal guidance for stationary source test teams, analytical laboratories, research laboratories, and other to perform PFAS emissions measurement of known and acceptable quality. This presentation describes the method framework and potential applications.
