Risk management solutions to indoor biological contamination

Citation:

Betancourt, D. Risk management solutions to indoor biological contamination. Speaker's Bureau virtual presentation - Saint Andrews University, NA, NC, April 23, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

This is an EPA Speaker's Bureau virtual presentation for St Andrews University. The Speaker's Bureau is a free resource for groups in central N.C., with a focus on low-income schools (50%+ free/reduced lunch) to help close the opportunity gap and build capacity for a more diverse workforce. The Speaker's Bureau is a component of the EPA’s Community Engagement & STEM Education Program in Research Triangle Park (RTP) that communicates EPA science to students, educators, and the public with the goal of increasing the public’s knowledge on how protecting the environment protects human health.

Description:

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within and around the indoor built environment – public buildings, schools, and residences- and it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. Understanding and controlling common pollutants indoors can help reduce your risk of indoor health concerns. Indoor air quality is very important for public health because we spent approximately 90% of our time indoors. There are many sources of indoor air pollutants that originate from the release of gases and particles into the air that we breathe and generate respiratory problems and illnesses. EPA studies rank indoor air pollution among the top four environmental risks to the public. This presentation highlights the indoor research performed at the EPA Biocontaminant Laboratory (BIOLAB) dealing with the characterization, control and remediation of indoor biological pollutants.
