EPA Training Webinar: Freshwater Explorer of water quality parameters

Impact/Purpose:

(1) Problem: Higher levels of minerals in the water can cause harmful algal blooms and affect aquatic wildlife increasing costs for making water suitable for drinking and other purposes. (2) Work and Result: Design an accessible and intuitive interface to visualize and explore water quality in a map format. The Freshwater Explorer exhibits a network of streams in the U.S color-coded for measured freshness (i.e., low salt and nutrient mineral content). (3) Impact: This tool is useful for states to work with communities and regulated entities to find the right balance of protection and use of fresh water. (4) User community: State, tribes, regions, program offices, other agencies, general public.

Description:

Higher levels of minerals in the water can cause harmful algal blooms and affect aquatic wildlife. These conditions can increase costs for making water suitable for drinking by people and livestock, for use in agricultural and industrial processes, and for water reuse. The Freshwater Explorer provides information on the status of water resources for networks of streams in the U.S color-coded for measured freshness (i.e., low salt and mineral content). This makes the EPA's Water Quality Portal accessible and intuitive. Two parameters are currently available, phosphorous and conductivity, others will be added as data sets are curated. EPA Training Webinar: Freshwater Explorer of water quality parameters After the training, users will be able to perform geographical searches and visualize background and measured data for water quality parameters. This combination of information is useful for states to work with communities and regulated entities to find the right balance of protection and use of fresh water. Access the Freshwater Explorer: https://arcg.is/KHb9S* *A UserID and password are required to access the Freshwater Explorer. Everyone registering for the EPA Tools and Resources Webinars' website will be provided with a temporary password a few days after the webinar. Once you have a permanent password the link should take you directly to the Explorer.
