Data Report: The Collection and Analysis of Bay of Fundy Sediment Under Contract between the Association of US Delegates to the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment and Eastern Charlotte Waterways for Contaminant Monitoring and Analysis. Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment & Global Program of Action Coalition, Boscawen, NH, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

Marine ecosystem monitoring for toxic contaminants has been done for many years to determine the location and severity of pollution in estuaries. However, in the Bay of Fundy portion of the Gulf of Maine, sediment contaminant data are lacking. The Gulf of Maine Council provided funds to the EcoSystem Indicator Partnership for the collection and analysis of sediment for toxic organic and inorganic chemicals in the Bay of Fundy. Results show generally show low contaminant levels throughout the Bay. However, levels at the mouths of the St John, and to a lesser extent, the St. Croix rivers were elevated likely due to their proximity to highly urbanized harbors. This data report will help environmental authorities and citizens alike to protect the Bay of Fundy and restore those areas that need to be restored.

Description:

A data report was developed from the collection and analysis of sediment for organic and inorganic contaminants in the Bay of Fundy. The purpose is to fill in gaps in sediment contamination in the Bay.
