Adding Reservoirs to the Inventory of US Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks
Impact/Purpose:
This presentation provides a high level overview of EPA's efforts to estimate the magnitude of greenhouse gas emissions from US reservoirs.
Description:
Over the last 10 years the EPA has been conducting research to better quantify the magnitude of greenhouse gas emissions from US reservoirs. In 2021 reservoirs were included in the Inventory of US Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks for the first time and currently estimate to emit 44 million metric tons of methane annually, ranking them as the are the fifth largest anthropogenic methane source in the US. The US EPA is conducting a national-scale survey of reservoirs to better constrain the emission estimate.
