Microplastic research at the US Environmental Protection Agency..

Citation:

Burgess, R. Microplastic research at the US Environmental Protection Agency.. Foamy Friends informational meeting, NA, RI, February 10, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This informal informational presentation is to the Foamy Friends- a coalition of State regulators interested in water quality in order to build bridges between federal and state government scientists and mangers in the field of microplastics research

Description:

The objectives of the microplastics (MP) research program in SSWR is to develop and standardize methods for the collection, extraction, identificationand quantification of MP in water and sediment, as well as develop capacity for MP analysis in ORD's laboratories nationwide. Progress has been madein working with the State of California in their methods development for water and sediment. We also demonstrate a number of approaches used to develop methods for the smaller fraction of MP (40 microns to 1 nanometer) including cytometry-hyperspectral imaging, use of magnetic hydrophobic Fe particles, and pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. We discuss how we can advance citizen science methods and summarize projects focused on microplastic research.
