BOSC Review SSWR 1.4 Microplastics

Citation:

Ho, K. AND R. Burgess. BOSC Review SSWR 1.4 Microplastics. Board of Scientific Councilors, Virtual, October 28 - 29, 2020.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will give the BOSC committee the information to evaluate progress in SSWR's microplastic research program (SSWR 1.4).

Description:

The objectives of the microplastics (MP) research program in SSWR 1.4 is to develop and standardize methods for the collection, extraction, identification and quantification of MP in water and sediment, as well as develop capacity for MP analysis in ORD's laboratories nationwide. Progress has been made in working with the State of California in their methods development for water and sediment. We also demonstrate a number of approaches used to develop methods for the smaller fraction of MP (40 microns to 1 nanometer) including cytometry-hyperspectral imaging, use of magnetic hydrophobic FE particles, and pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. We discuss how we can advance citizen science methods and summarize projects at EPA associated with SSWR’s program.
