Impact/Purpose:

Under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Action Plan I (2010-2014), Focus area 1 (Toxic Substances and Areas of Concern), goal 5 was to – protect the health and integrity of wildlife populations and habitat from adverse chemical and biological effects associated with the presence of toxic substances in the Great Lakes Basin. One of the major aims under goal 5 was to better understand the prevalence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the Great Lakes Basin, and the threats they may pose to wildlife. Appendix E provides an overview of a five year ORD research effort, aimed at developing approaches and tools that can be used to predict or detect biological activities associated with CECs, provide insights into their sources, define the types of adverse effects to wildlife that might be associated with those exposures, and understand what classes of organisms may be vulnerable. Key findings and progress are outlined along with management implications and potential applications of the current research. Appendix E serves as one component of a science communication and outreach effort aimed at translating the products of this research effort into tools and strategies that can be implemented by Regional, state, and local resource managers charged with protecting the Great Lakes and the ecosystem services they provide. This product has been developed in coordination with the Region 5, Great Lakes National Program Office and contributes to a report being used as one of the measures of success for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
