Impact/Purpose:
Poster presented to the Brownfields Conference August 2022. This poster shares information about the development and functionality of the Dredged Materials Decision Tool (DMDT). This poster will be on display at the 2022 Brownfields Conference to inform attendees of the utility of dredged material beneficial use in brownfield and other site remediation or restoration projects, and to introduce the DMDT as a tool for potential project partners to use in facilitating beneficial use projects.
Description:
Beneficially using dredged materials on brownfields or other sites can help solve a problem for communities who want to find suitable material for a cap or amendments to remediate a contaminated or abandoned site. Managers of dredged materials also benefit from having alternative options to dredged material disposal, saving space in disposal facilities, reducing demand on terrestrial borrow sources, and treating dredged material as a resource instead of waste. Dredged materials offer a useful resource for brownfields site remediation. To support wider beneficial use of dredged materials, USEPA is undertaking research to further understand the complexities of dredged materials beneficial use. This effort led to examination of the decision-making processes concerning beneficial use, and the creation of a decision-support tool designed to facilitate effective stakeholder collaboration toward beneficial use.
