ECOTOX Knowledgebase Output for Study Quality and Data Review Applications

Impact/Purpose:

The ECOTOXicology Knowledgebase (ECOTOX) provides curated single chemical environmental toxicity data on aquatic and terrestrial organisms for use in risk assessment, risk management, and research. Data analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of toxicity results are application- and assessment-specific, and thus are conducted outside of the ECOTOX. However, many of the data fields extracted into ECOTOX provide information to answer commonly applied study evaluation questions and complement formal study quality or risk of bias evaluations that require review of the original publications. To aid in study evaluation, several options were added to the ECOTOX user interface for output and export of data fields most pertinent for evaluating relevance, reliability, and/or risk of bias.

Description:

Toxicity test results from ECOTOX are used in multiple applications and assessments. For these, the data analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of toxicity results are application- or assessment-specific, and thus conducted outside of the ECOTOX. ECOTOX data extraction includes many fields that can be used to inform study evaluation and complement formal quality or risk of bias assessments that require review of the original publications. These fields include study design, test conditions, species and chemical details, etc. To support study evaluation for assessments, several output and export options were developed in the ECOTOX user interface to provide the most pertinent information for toxicity test studies and results in a user-friendly format.
