PFAS FY21: ECOTOX Knowledgebase updates , including new toxicity data for PFAS
Impact/Purpose:
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have potential ecological impacts, yet the risks are challenging to characterize due to the number of PFAS. It is unreasonable to evaluate each compound with traditional whole animal toxicity testing. Thus, chemical assessments must rely instead on existing empirical data, computational models, and predictive tools with limited targeted testing. This objective of this work was to comprehensively and systematically assemble and describe available evidence for ecological effects of PFAS. This work leveraged the well-established protocols of the ECOTOXicology Knowledgebase to conduct PFAS-specific literature searches, identify relevant studies, and extract toxicity study details and results. This thorough and transparent process provides timely and transparent data to users seeking toxic effects data for a myriad of regulatory and research applications, including for designation of PFAS as hazardous.
Description:
This product will be comprised of updates each quarter in FY21 to the public-facing ECOTOX Knowledgebase website.
