Impact/Purpose:
Presentation to the Zebrafish Husbandry Workshop sponsored by Aquaneering Inc. within the Aquaculture 2022 Annual Meeting presented by the World Aquaculture Society March 2022. Methylene blue is a common antifungal used in zebrafish animal husbandry. We assessed the developmental and neurodevelopment effects of methylene blue on zebrafish embryos and larvae. The results show that considerable caution is warranted when using this chemical in accepted animal husbandry protocols.
Description:
This presentation is on methylene blue, the first fully synthetic drug used in medicine. It has been used on humans, mice and for aquaculture/research by tropical fish hobbyists. Including our previous work, methylene blue appears safe for use with zebrafish embryos up to 10 µM which falls within the most commonly used concentrations. Concentrations above 31 µM methylene blue are not recommended. Use of methylene blue when the exact concentration is not known is not safe for use with zebrafish embryos.
