Impact/Purpose:

This presentation summarizes EPA GLTED efforts operating a Slocum G2 autonomous underwater glider in the Great Lakes since 2014.  We also will share new data analytic and visualization techniques and interagency collaborations.  Sharing this information hopefully will lead to additional future collaborations and contribute to our knowledge of Great Lakes water quality trends and status.

Description:

PA ORD (Office of Research and Development) and the EPA GLNPO (Great Lakes National Program Office) have been operating a Slocum G2 autonomous underwater glider in the Great Lakes since 2014.  Since that time, we have completed twenty glider missions across all five Great Lakes.  Thirteen of these have been in Lake Superior, with two 3 week missions in Lake Michigan, two 3 week missions in Lake Ontario, one 3 week mission in Lake Erie and a one week mission in Lake Huron (the Lake Huron mission was truncated due to a leak in the hull).  We have learned a lot from these glider missions and have now collected more than 60,000 profiles over 7,200 km of glider transects in the Great Lakes.  We have developed new data analytic and visualization techniques, laid groundwork for interagency collaborations, and are sharing these data publicly.  We’ll also discuss our future plans as we eagerly anticipate delivery of a second Slocum G3 glider, designed specifically for algal bloom monitoring and research.
