Description:

Thyroid hormones (TH) are important to numerous bodily functions such as development and homeostasis and can be useful bellwethers for identifying biologically disruptive compounds. Research into the effects of environmental pollutants such as pesticides and other endocrine disruptors may call for the analysis of THs, for which serum levels are routinely used. However, the suitability of serum measurements for understanding adverse outcome pathways (AOP) in the brain is unclear. Though interfering compounds and the naturally low levels of THs make brain tissue a more challenging matrix, the analysis could provide a more nuanced understanding of AOPs by illuminating the key events (KE) involved in developmental and adult neurotoxicity.
