AIR TOXICS MONITORING FOR BUCKET BRIGADE
Impact/Purpose:
Provide data to community monitoring groups to support evaluation of the quality of monitoring efforts and techniques.
Description:
There are four major oil refineries and many large industrial facilities located along the San Francisco Bay in Contra Costa County. The Contra Costa Bucket Brigade is a citizen's air toxics monitoring group that uses home-made sampling buckets equipped with Tedlar bags to take air samples when chemical releases are suspected. EPA periodically provides stainless steel canisters for side-by side non-event related sampling with air sampling buckets. EPA then performs analysis of both samples and provides results to the Bucket Brigade for comparative studies and quality assurance checks.
