Underground Storage Tanks Environmental Justice Mapper

Citation:

Hall, A. AND F. Kremer. Underground Storage Tanks Environmental Justice Mapper. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

Underground storage tanks (USTs) and leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs) are dispropotionately co-located in more minority and low-income communties than their counterpart. This infrastructure is also more prevelant in environmental justice communities. The environmental burden of USTs to these communties include contamintate sites, vapor intrusion, and contaminated groundwater. Knowing where USTs and LUSTs are located and in what types of communties provides the EPA, states, and stakeholders information to make decisions on prioritizing clean-up and prevention activities.

Description:

This online web mapping application combines EJSCREEN with UST Finder data in order to locate underground storage tank infrasctructure in environmental justice communities. USTs and LUSTs within environmental justice commutnies can be identifed and queried as well as sites within sourcewater protection areas, floodplains, wells, and population.
