Emerging tech: air sensors and air quality data products

Citation:

Hagler, G. Emerging tech: air sensors and air quality data products. 2022 Air Resource Advisor Training Class, Boise, ID, June 13 - 17, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This is a training presentation to the 2022 class of Air Resource Advisor trainees (ARAs), as part of a several day training session managed by the Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program. The focus of this presentation is to ensure the trainees have a baseline understanding about the variety of air quality monitors / sensors and information products that influence information the public sees about smoke during wildfires. This presentation complements pre-work conducted by the trainees (reviewing past recorded talks and online materials) and is designed to be interactive and spark dialogue between the instructor and trainees.

Description:

Over the past decade, a significant shift has taken place in air quality measurements and data products. Emerging technologies include compact sensor systems that now far outnumber the regulatory monitoring locations, public data dashboards that show sensor data to the public or make the data freely available through an API, and data fusion products that may blend model and observational data to estimate air quality anywhere in the world. This presentation is designed to teach Air Resource Advisor trainees about these technology changes which may enhance their work in assessing smoke and to ensure they are aware about how and why air quality information from different providers can provide different answers for the same location during smoke episodes.
