Introduction to Air Sensors

Citation:

Clements, A. AND R. Duvall. Introduction to Air Sensors. Presented at National Association of Clean Air Agencies (NCAA) Public Outreach Committee, NA - Virtual, January 11, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

Air sensors have become more available to the public who are using the devices to learn about air quality in their communities. The sensor user group has evolved to include both technical and non-technical audiences, and introductory information on air sensors is needed to help facilitate their use. This presentation provides an introduction to air sensors and air quality topics. This presentation was originally requested by EPA OAR to support the Mexico-U.S. border work and other international collaborations that incorporate air sensors. This presentation can be used by other EPA labs/center/offices and regional offices to communicate general information about sensors to the public, partners, or others. This presentation will be made available on EPA’s Air Sensor Toolbox and translated and posted to EPA’s Air Sensor Toolbox resources in Spanish webpage.

Description:

Air sensors are being used more frequently by the public to measure local air quality. As the user group of sensors has evolved to include both technical and non-technical audiences, there is often a need to provide introductory information on air sensors to help facilitate their use. This presentation provides an introduction to air sensors and includes topics such as background information on sensors, differences between sensors and regulatory monitors, uses for sensors, planning and conducting studies using air sensors, quality assurance and quality control, using air sensor evaluations, data analysis, and additional resources. The presentation is suitable for a 60-minute talk and can be modified as needed.
