Session 6: Iron and manganese control in groundwater systems
Citation:
Keithley, Sarah (Asher). Session 6: Iron and manganese control in groundwater systems. EPA ORD-Region 4 Small Drinking Water Systems, Cincinnati, OH, October 14 - 15, 2020.
Impact/Purpose:
Iron and manganese are naturally occurring elements commonly found in groundwater. Both iron and manganese can cause aesthetic issues, such as staining and discoloration, and manganese may have negative neurotoxic effects at higher concentrations. This presentation discusses physical-chemical and biological treatment options to remove iron and manganese and presents results from three pilot- and full-scale case studies. The findings may help guide treatment process selection and design. Program or regional partners, engineers, and local communities may be interested in this presentation.
