Impact/Purpose:
This research sheds light on alternative nutrient management through nutrient recovery, which may achieve economic and environmental benefits and overall higher system efficiency. System-based emergy accounting tools for system-wide evaluations are showcased and provide in-depth analyses of the economic trade-offs, environmental impacts and system performances. The detailed holistic evaluation helps the decision-makers design more robust, effective and sustainable water systems.
Description:
This study compared the thermodynamic efficiencies of struvite derived from wastewater and diammonium phosphate fertilizers in production, crop uptake, and runoff. It showed the trade-offs and insights for alternative nutrient management.
