Citation:

Chattopadhyay, S. Sample Collection Information Document for Pathogens--Companion to Selected Analytical Methods for Environmental Remediation and Recovery (SAM) 2017. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/R-17/374, 2017.

Impact/Purpose:

Well-chosen and well-implemented methods for sample collection are essential for all types of environmental evaluations. This sample collection information document is intended to assist state, municipal and local agencies, contractor, non-profit organizations, and by EPA staff involving the collection of water, soil, sediment, or other samples taken to characterize areas of potential environmental contamination by pathogens and making decisions during the procedural and analytical requirements. The report includes information on sample collection, containers, preservation, size, and packaging, and provides additional information sources to support the collection of samples from field to the laboratory to be analyzed for the selected pathogens. Proper collection, preservation and storage of biological samples allow for methods that enhance the likelihood of successful identification, quantification, assessments nature and extent, and ultimately help responders in the field determining whether the pathogens pose a health threat.
