Impact of Growth Conditions and Suspension Time on Toxin Release from M. aeruginosa Upon Exposure to Potassium Permanganate

Citation:

Roland, D., D. Dionysiou, AND N. Dugan. Impact of Growth Conditions and Suspension Time on Toxin Release from M. aeruginosa Upon Exposure to Potassium Permanganate. To be Presented at AWWA Ohio Section Annual Meeting, Toledo, OH, September 27 - 29, 2017.

Impact/Purpose:

The majority of peer-reviewed cyanobacterial toxin release studies are based on cultured cyanobacteria. These cyanobacteria have been cultured under a variety of conditions. The purpose of this study is to begin examining the impact of culturing conditions on the tendency of cyanobacterial cells to release toxins in to solution when exposed to an oxidant. This data in this document will be useful to practicing engineers, utility personnel and academicians who are interpreting cyanobacterial toxin release results from various publications.

Description:

The objective of this work was to assess the effects of KMnO4 on pure cultures of cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa) in a jar test. Of particular interest was the impact this oxidant has on the release of intracellular toxin from cells as a function of growth conditions in culture, pH (7 or 9) of cell suspension during the test, and suspension time prior to oxidant exposure. Pre-oxidant addition suspension times of 30 minutes and 24 hours were evaluated.
