Impact/Purpose:

What is the study? This paper describes the process by which the committee of which I was a member brought to the attention of the EMS membership the idea of changing the name of the society and the subsequent process, discussion, and vote that lead to changing the name to EMGS. Why was it done? In the interest of transparency to the membership, the committee of which I was a member, thought it would be useful to have a historical record of the process by which we managed the consideration of changing the name of EMS to EMOS. What is the impact to the field and the agency? There is no immediate impact to the Agency; however, the change of the name of this important society to incorporate the word “genomics” will hopefully have some impact on the field by attracting a critical number of scientists doing genomics. By inter-acting with other scientists in the society, more research on the influence. of the environment on the genome will be promoted, which will help provide useful data for this and other agencies charged with consideration of the effects of the environment on human health.

Description:

In late 2012 the members of the Environmental Mutagen Society voted to change its name to the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society. Here we describe the thought process that led to adoption of the new name, which both respects the rich history of a Society founded in 1969 and reflects the many advances in our understanding of the nature and breadth of gene-environment interactions during the intervening 43 years.
