Best Practices for Developing Successful Environmental Health Research Tools

Citation:

La Grenade-Finch, A. Best Practices for Developing Successful Environmental Health Research Tools. National Environmental Health Association 2023 Annual Conference, New Orleans, LA, July 31 - August 03, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

Environmental health tools are tools developed to meet the research needs of states/territories and other entities, such as tribes, local governments, and communities. To continue to meet these needs, it is important to continually improve upon existing tools and look to implement best practices that will lead to the development of better tools in the future. This session will feature presentations from select EPA tool owners on lessons learned and best practices for developing a successful environmental health research tool, including tool inception, tool development, tool communication, and tool metrics for success.

Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Office of Research and Development (ORD) funds and develops several environmental health tools. These tools have been developed to address a number of environmental health issues related to air, water, land, and chemicals. Environmental health tools assist decision makers, educators, and community members in assessing and managing environmental risks, creating educational materials, writing grants, raising general awareness, etc.  In looking across our tools, we have developed a compilation of best practices to inform improvements to current tools and guide the creation of future tools. This session will feature presentations from select EPA tool owners on lessons learned and best practices for developing a successful environmental health research tool, including tool inception, tool development, tool communication, and tool metrics for success.
