Impact/Purpose:

This abstract for a poster represents collaboration with CDC to validate a method to detect anatoxin and it degradation products in human urine. USEPA supplied urine from mice dosed with known amounts of anatoxin to contribute towards the validation process which was successful. This information will help document human exposure to anatoxins.

Description:

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a global concern and necessitate ongoing surveillance to monitor the effects of these blooms and their associated cyanotoxins. One such cyanotoxin, anatoxin-a (ATX), is a potent neurotoxin produced during select HABs. ATX is found frequently in clear water which results in a high risk of human exposure by accidental ingestion, making the toxin a public health concern. Research about ATX biotransformations and the presence of its metabolic products after exposure remains limited. Here, we employ high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to detect and identify ATX and its predicted metabolites in mouse urine samples to gain insight into the biotransformation of ATX after an exposure event.
