Citation:

Boczek, L., R. Herrmann, E. Resek, AND T. Richman. Pathogens and Vector Attraction in Sewage Sludge. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/R-22/194, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

This document will provide the user updated information on pathogen treatment and monitoring as well as vector attraction reduction options related to treatment and subsequent land application of biosolids.  This document provides background information to many different aspects of biosolids treatments and the potential pathogens associated with these materials.

Description:

The document Pathogens and Vectors in Biosolids is an update to the ORD document that was published in 2003 entitled "Control of Pathogens and Vector Attraction Reduction in Sewage Sludge."  This document was listed in the OIG report on EPA's management of biosolids report that was published in 2018, as in need of updating.  The material listed in the document was outdated, and newer approved methods needed to be included to clarify biosolids management and treatment practices with respect to pathogens present and biosolids not attracting vectors during land application events.  This document goes into detail with respect to the 40 CFR Part 503 regulations that govern treatment and disposal of biosolids, with respect to dealing with pathogen testing, monitoring, and record keeping.  It also discusses in detail the vector attraction reduction processes that are required by the regulatory process.
