What's New in SPECIATE 5.4?
Citation:
Pouliot, G. What's New in SPECIATE 5.4? Emissions Inventory Conference 2025, Research Triangle Park, NC, September 15 - 18, 2025.
Impact/Purpose:
The SPECIATE database serves as a vital resource for understanding and managing air pollution by providing detailed speciation profiles of organic gases, particulate matter, and other pollutants from diverse sources. Its purpose is to support the development of accurate emissions inventories, enhance air quality modeling, and facilitate the assessment of air toxic pollutants and black carbon. By enabling precise chemical analysis and modeling, SPECIATE empowers policymakers, researchers, and environmental agencies to make informed decisions aimed at improving air quality and protecting public health and the environment.
Description:
SPECIATE is the EPA's database of speciation profiles detailing the composition of pollutants from various air sources, essential for applications like emissions inventories and air quality modeling. The EPA uses this data for the National Emissions Inventory (NEI) to estimate emissions of organic carbon, sulfate, nitrate species, and hazardous air pollutants. SPECIATE v5.4 expands the database to 6,897 profiles, adding new profiles for swine farm emissions and tire wear, based on peer-reviewed studies. This version retains original PM formats, utilizing the S2S-Tool for conversions, and includes updates to track profiles used in recent modeling platforms. SPECIATE is currently housed in an Access database, a set of workbooks, and an online browser. We propose an update which integrates these components into a single web-accessible system for easier updates and access.
