Impact/Purpose:

This dataset is the first synthesis of quality-controlled continuous water quality monitoring data from 14 estuarine systems of the National Estuary Program (NEP).  The data have been compiled, organized, and quality-controlled as part of a partnership between EPA's Pacific Coastal Science Branch and the NEPs  to synthesize and assess the state of water quality monitoring data within the National Estuary Program.  The dataset resulted from a collaboration with ~50 partners amongst the 14 NEP locations, and will allow for national scale comparisons of estuarine water quality conditions.  A unique aspect of this dataset is its high-quality; it features data from state-of-the-art water quality sensors only recently made available for coastal monitoring, and will be useful for assessing the utility of historic water quality datasets.

Description:

This dataset consists of continuous water quality monitoring data collected in 14 estuarine systems of the National Estuary Program (NEP).  The data have been compiled, organized, and quality-controlled as part of a partnership between EPA's Pacific Coastal Science Branch and the NEPs to synthesize and assess the state of water quality monitoring data within the National Estuary Program.  The data are suitable for a variety of water quality investigations (e.g. acidification, hypoxia, eutrophication), and generally consist of georeferenced and time-stamped salinity, temperature, water depth, dissolved oxygen, pH, and chlorophyll a (in situ fluorescence). The National Estuary Programs included in this dataset include:  Barnegat Bay, Casco Bay, Coastal Bend Bays, Delaware Inland Bays, Indian River Lagoon, Long Island Sound, Mobile Bay, Morro Bay, Narragansett Bay, New York-New Jersey Harbors, San Francisco Bay, Tampa Bay, Tillamook Bay, and Puget Sound.
