Abstract |
The 180-acre Butterworth No. 2 Landfill is a municipal landfill in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. After the enactment of Michigan Act 87 in 1965, Butterworth No. 1 was closed, and Butterworth No. 2 and No. 3 were opened. Several high-voltage power transmission lines pass through the landfill, and landfilling was not allowed in the areas below the power lines; however, it was discovered that the area was allegedly used to dispose of liquid wastes, such as solvents and paint sludge. Records indicate that from 1967 to 1971, approximately 3,000 to 4,000 cubic yards of waste per day were received at the landfill. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil are VOCs, including benzene, TCE, and xylenes; organics, including PCBs, and pesticides; and metals, including arsenic, chromium, and lead. |
