Abstract |
The 20-acre White Farm Equipment Dump site is an active landfill near the north border of Charles City in Floyd County, Iowa. Drainage from the site toward the northwest and south feeds into adjacent wetland areas. The Charles City municipal wells, located 700 feet east of the site, obtain water from the deep, confined Cedar Valley aquifer. Additionally, six shallow drinking water wells that draw from an uncontrolled water table are 1,000 feet downgradient from the site. Intermittently since 1971, approximately 650,000 cubic yards of wet scrubber sludges, foundry sands, baghouse dusts, and other industrial wastes were disposed of onsite. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil, debris, and ground water are VOCs including benzene and toluene; and metals including arsenic, lead, and chromium. |
