Abstract |
The nutritive value of aquatic plants is of interest from several standpoints. They serve as the main source of food for a variety of aquatic fauna, including the insects among the invertebrates. Diets of vertebrates such as moose, muskrat and beaver, as well as many water-fowl, are chiefly composed of aquatic vegetation. Therefore, it would appear that aquatic plants may have a valuable potential as a livestock forage. The nutritive value of aquatic plants was determined by proximate, Van Soest and mineral analyses. A brief explanation of terms and which nutrients are determined by each analyses is presented. Laboratory procedures are discussed. |
