Abstract The purpose of this document is to describe demonstrations, field applications, and research on electrokinetics for remediating contaminated soils and ground water at waste disposal and spill sites. Although clay and silt tend to sequester large quantities of organic and inorganic contaminants, they are resistant to remediation with traditional technologies because of their low hydraulic conductivities. Although electrokinetics has been used for decades in the oil recovery industry and to remove water from soils, in situ applications of electrokinetics to remediate contaminated soil is new.
