Abstract A population exposure model for PM, called the Stochastic Human Exposure and Dose Simulation (SHEDS-PM) model (Version 1), has been developed. The main objectives for the initial model development were: to predict the distribution of daily averaged total exposure to PM for the population of an urban/metropolitan area; to estimate the contribution of PM of ambient origin to total PM exposure; to determine the major factors that influence personal exposure to PM; and to identify factors that contribute the greatest uncertainty to model predictions. To meet these objectives, a case study was selected for the SHEDS-PM model and appropriate input databases were developed.
