Abstract |
The document provides the technical background and justification for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's proposed regulation (40 CFR part 503) on pathogen and vector attraction reduction in municipal wastewater sludge (Subpart F). The document summarizes the existing 40 CFR 257 Federal regulations for controlling pathogens and vector attraction in sludge and discusses their shortcomings. It presents the components of disease risk, including the pathogens of concern (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths), their types, measurement, environmental fate and transport and infective dose. The document discusses the principal aspects of the proposed new regulations concerning sludge pathogen and vector attraction control and discusses the available scientific information that supports these regulations, as well as data gaps and areas where additional information would be helpful. |
