Abstract The iron and steel industry is categorized by the Bureau of the Census under the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 33, primary metal industries. The industry is further classified by the three-digit codes 331, Steel Works, Blast Furnaces, and Rolling and Finishing Mills, and 332 Iron and Steel Foundries. Since steel works, blast furnaces, and rolling and finishing mills account for the majority of environmental releases, employees, and value of shipments, this profile concentrates on the three-digit SIC 331. Some sections of the profile focus specifically on industries in the four-digit SIC 3312, since virtually all establishments producing primary products (iron and steel) under SIC 3312, also produce secondary products that fall under some of the other iron and steel SIC codes under SIC 331.
