| Abstract |
The 300-square-mile Savannah River site (SRS) is a DOE facility located in Aiken County, 20 miles south of Aiken, South Carolina, and 25 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia. The A/M area, located in the northwest portion of the SRS, contained many operations that involved the use of hazardous substances. Between 1952 and 1981, an estimated 13 million pounds of chlorinated solvents were used in the A/M area to degrease fuel and target tubes for use in the SRS reactors. An estimated 50 to 90 percent of the solvents evaporated during use; however, the remaining solvents were discharged to the process sewer system. As a result of these activities and incidents, a ground water plume, encompassing 1,200 acres beneath the A/M area, is contaminated with significant concentrations of VOCs. The ROD addresses an interim remedy for the A/M area ground water subsurface vadose zone, as OU3. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water in the A/M area are VOCs, including PCE and TCE. |
