Abstract |
The report documents the results of four case studies of correlations between industrial activity and community disease: (1) copper smelting and respiratory/digestive diseases; (2) steel manufacturing and digestive neoplasms; (3) bituminous coal mining and cardiovascular/respiratory diseases; (4) viscose rayon and cardiovascular diseases. The four correlations were found by statistical analyses correlating county-by-county mortality data with industrial data. The case studies consisted of field investigations at specific industrial sites to explore the plausibility of causal relationships between the selected industries and the associated diseases. Overall purpose of the work is to assist in the development of objective and systematic methodology for identifying industrial origins of community disease. Results of the case studies provide a basis for assessing the feasibility of finding causal industry-disease associations by correlating county-by-county industry and mortality data. |
