Abstract The paper discusses the viewpoints of people of varied backgrounds and interests on the subject of wild and scenic rivers as expressed at the Wild and Scenic/Rivers Symposium. The discussion covers most of the main points of wild rivers, from the plea to save some rivers for posterity to the developmental opportunities that rivers afford. Several conclusions were drawn from the Symposium. First, the 'Wild and Scenic Rivers Act' enacted by Congress is not a water project development act, but because there is some question as to development opportunities it was suggested that benefits foregone should be measured. A method to indicate the importance of aesthetic values should be developed, and the problem of identifying aesthetics needs resolved. Emphasis should be placed on alternative methods of wild and scenic river evaluation. This is a broader problem than just economics or engineering. Education of the public in terms of wild and scenic rivers is needed, as well as providing means for the public to express their preferences. (WRSIC abstract)
