Abstract A collaborative study was performed on Method 7 proposed by the EPA for determining the nitrogen oxide emissions from stationary sources. Method 7 specifies the collection of a grab sample in an evacuated flash containing a dilute sulfuric acid-hydrogen peroxide absorbing solution, and the colorimetric measurement of the nitrogen oxides, except nitrous oxide, using the phenoldisulfonic acid procedure. Collaborative tests were conducted at both a coal-fired steam generating power plant and an oil-fired pilot plant by four collaborative teams. Because of chemically significant distortions inherent in the gas cylinder accuracy test, the accuracy of Method 7 could not be adequately demonstrated. The estimated minimum detectable limit of Method 7 is 5.14 x 10 to the -7th power lb./s.c.f. Most of the apparent laboratory bias variation actually is not a true laboratory effect but rather a day effect primarily caused by dubious daily spectrophotometer re-calibration procedures.
