Abstract |
The paper describes the integration of quality assurance (QA) into each phase of radon mitigation: initial problem assessment, premitigation diagnostics, mitigation system specification and installation diagnostics, and post-mitigation diagnostics. During each phase, the interests and responsibilities of the different parties (individuals, companies, and governments) must be understood in order to ensure the quality of the installed mitigation system. Residential radon reduction requires that houses be individually evaluated to identify the source(s) of radon, to select an appropriate mitigation technique, to design the mitigation system, and to confirm that the installed system is effective. A variety of measurements in addition to radon levels may be necessary to accomplish these objectives. QA practices and quality control (QC) procedures can be applied to ensure that sufficient information of known quality is available to make design decisions and that the final system is properly installed, safe, and effective. |
