Abstract |
The interference of metals with the determination of arsenic by the silver diethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) Method was investigated. Low recoveries of arsenic are obtained when cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, nitrate, nickel or phosphate are at concentrations of 7 mg/l or above (individually or collectively). A positive interference is obtained when the concentration of antimony is 0.3 mg/l or above and the concentration of mercury is 1.5 mg/l or above. Prevention of antimony and mercury interference was found to be possible by removal with an ion exchange resin. Potassium permanganate digestion at 35C was found to be reliable. |

Contents Notes |
Several metal ions--chromium, cobalt, copper, mercury, molybdenum, and antimony--have been reported to interfere in the determination of arsenic in water and waste water by the Silver Diethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) method, but the limit of interference by each ion has never been precisely evaluated. Conflicting reports have also appeared in the literature on the role of chromium and antimony as interfering ions in this method. The present study was undertaken to resolve the confusion that surrounds the use of the SDDC method for the determination of arsenic in water and waste water. |
