Abstract Human exposure to lead has been shown to be cumulative in nature. In order to assess the toxicological significance of environmental lead exposures, it is necessary to define the contributions to an individual's daily lead uptake from all possible exposure pathways. This paper defines and quantifies the major environmental sources of lead exposure, describes the absorption characteristics of lead compounds in man via each exposure route, determines the source contribution factors for daily lead uptake by each exposure pathway, and relates those contributions to an individual's blood-lead level.
