Contents Notes Various polymer films to be used in sealing mercury contaminated sediments were studied. Materials were selected for detailed study on the basis of barrier properties to mercury compounds, strength, handleability, and estimated service life. Although most polymers are effective barriers to HgCl2, the resistance to organic compounds can vary from poor to very good. Nylon 6 and high density polyethylene proved to be the most effective barriers to organic mercury. It was concluded that polymer films can be effectively used to seal mercury contaminated sediments. Estimated costs for film deployment are given and equipment concepts for film deployment were demonstrated. The nylon 6 system was recommended for field demonstration.
