Abstract Platinum and palladium are used as the active components in the catalytic converters of air pollution control devices of motor vehicles. The use of these metals is accompanied by the potential loss of platinum and palladium into the environment. This laboratory has been involved in studies on the biochemical effects of these metals. Data have been compiled on the platinum and palladium content in six rat tissues after the dietary administration of platinum or palladium salts. The platinum and palladium content in rat tissues does not appear to correlate with the rates of weight gain of rats, the organ weights, or the four parameters of drug metabolism which were studied.
